Baby With Down Syndrome Sends Mail To Doctor Who Wanted Her Aborted
Courtney Baker stood firm in her decision to bring her daughter with Down Syndrome into this world even though her doctor strongly advised her and her husband against it. Now that Baby Emmy is now 15-months-old, her mother penned a heartfelt letter for the doctor and had her cute little baby post it!
Baby Emmy was diagnosed with prenatal Down Syndrome and as a result, her doctor deemed it best for her not to be born. According to the unnamed doctor, Courtney and her husband's quality of life will take a turn for the worse if they do not abort the baby, as reported by Stuff NZ.
The couple did not heed the advice and now that she is growing beautifully, Baker wrote her feelings in a letter for the doctor. The contents of the letter were shared in Parker Myles, a Down syndrome awareness site. The site also interviewed the mom, and now the story is viral!
The letter started with Courtney revealiing to her doctor how different her experience is compared to her friend, who also have Down Syndrome. "A friend recently told me of when her prenatal specialist would see her child during her sonograms, he would comment, 'He's perfect.' Once her son was born with Down syndrome, she visited that same doctor. He looked at her little boy and said, 'I told you. He's perfect.'"
According to Courtney, her friend's experience made her sad although she is truly happy for her friend. This is because she did not hear the same thing from her doctor. "I came to you during the most difficult time in my life. I was terrified, anxious and in complete despair. I didn't know the truth yet about my baby, and that's what I desperately needed from you. But instead of support and encouragement, you suggested we terminate our child," Courtney wrote.
The mother added that even though the doctor knew she already picked a name for her baby, the doctor did not feel any remorse for her abortion advice. "I told you her name, and you asked us again if we understood how low our quality of life would be with a child with Down syndrome. You suggested we reconsider our decision to continue the pregnancy," the mother wrote.
She added that since then, she and her husband felt uneasy to continue checking up with the doctor. "The most difficult time in my life was made nearly unbearable because you never told me the truth. My child was perfect."
When baby Emmy emailed her letter for mommy, the proud mother gushed how lovely her kid is to Parker Myles, to show how indeed, perfect she is.
"This is Emmy, mailing our letter to the prenatal specialist who didn't want her to live. He repeatedly suggested we abort. He said her and our quality of life would be horrible." Emmy's mother Courtney Baker said. "He was so unbelievably wrong. I want to do something to advocate, but other than my letter to him, I don't know what yet."
Not everyone who shared the story felt happy for the mom though. There are also some who took the side of the doctor.
A Facebook user by the name of Stephen Williford said that "it's pretty obvious that the mother isn't really thinking about the long term here, and how she, her husband, and that poor child are going to live pretty rough lives. I 100% agree with aborting Down Syndrome children."
