Ancient Monumental Structure Discovered At Petra in Jordan
An ancient monumental structure buried under the sand of Petra has recently been discovered by archaeologists. The researchers were reportedly able to detect the monument by using ground drone images, satellite photos and ground surveys.
As per the study published in the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASR), the large platform detected underneath the sands is about the size of an Olympic swimming pool in length and twice in size in width. The researching team of archaeologists has said the new discovery is unlike any other structure that belongs to Petra's ancient site, and more interestingly the monument was hiding in plain sight.

"To my knowledge, we don't have anything quite like this at Petra," archaeologist Christopher Tuttle said. "I knew something was there and other archaeologists - who have worked in Petra for the last, God knows, 100 years at least - I know at least one other had noticed something there. I don't think anybody paid much attention to them."
The satellite surveys of the area showed the presence of an enormous platform that measured 184ft by 161ft. The satellite images revealed an interior platform with flagstones paving, and one side lined with columns and a huge staircase in one area. Pottery unearthed near the newly detected structure suggests it can date back to more than 2,150 years ago. Archaeologists are also speculating whether the monument had a ceremonial purpose.
Founded by the Nabataean civilization, the ancient site of Petra itself dates back to the fourth century BC. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra is best known for its famous Treasury Building which is carved entirely from the sandstone rock face, and hidden well in a valley. The location of the ancient building protected it from the harsh effects of the wind and rain, and also makes for an interesting walk through a narrow passage leading to the structure. Now it remains to be seen if the new discovery will turn out to another ancient marvel in the region.
