Zika Virus In The US: First Cases Detected In Riverside & Fresno County
The very first case of Zika virus has been detected and reported in Riverside County. This is quickly followed by an anouncement that there is also one in Fresno County.
On Tuesdays, health officials alerted the public that someone in Riverside County has been found in a 50-year-old man who recently visited the Caribbean, as reported by ABC 7. The officials surmised he contracted the virus when he traveled to the Dominican Republic.
Despite the alarm raised, officials claimed that there is no need to fret because it seems that the man is expected to fully recovery.
"While Riverside County is one of the last counties in Southern California to have a confirmed case, we always knew it would happen eventually," said county Public Health Officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser. "We will continue working with our partners in health care and vector control to protect our residents, especially pregnant women and the unborn, who are most at risk."
Later in the day, it was announced that there is also a case in Fresno Country. This time, it is a woman who had contracted the virus. She also traveled outside the country, as reported by ABC30.
Offficals also said she can fully recover but wanted everyone to be more vigilant and careful.
"I want to make sure that everybody in Fresno County is re-doubling their efforts to protect themselves from mosquito bites, both here at home and when they travel. And to re-double those efforts when they come back from countries that do have the on-going Zika Virus transmission," said Dr. Ken Bird, Fresno County Health Officer.
in the United States, apart from the Riverside County and the Fresno County, the zika virus was also traced in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
