Android in space - now there is a humanoid robot working aboard the International Space Station. Today's picture shows the appropriately named "Robonaut 2" working in the Destiny laboratory module of the ISS, on Jan. 2. Although he still needs to prove himself, until now its just another round of testing. And Robonaut isn't a very autonomous member of the crew yet, in fact he is wholly controlled by a team from Earth, who remotely commanded the robot to operate valves on a task board.

Robonaut is a testbed for exploring new robotic capabilities in space, and its form and dexterity allow it to use the same tools and control panels as its human counterparts do aboard the station.
