Do High Sugar Levels Among Children Really Cause Hyperactivity?
High sugar level among children does not directly cause their hyperactivity. A recent study on the relationship between children and body sugar reveals that high levels in children will not make them hyperactive.
According to Dr. Mark Wolraich, Chief of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, there is no need for any anxiety in parents if their children are very active during parties and this behavior is not because of sugary food intake, Live Science reported. This "sugar and children" report was released based on the research conducted by Dr. Wolraich during the 1990s. The research was conducted due to the widespread agony in parents and their suspicion over sugar. They blamed sugar for their children's extraordinary behavior and restless activities.
Sugar does not increase the hyperactivity in children, but it causes the deposit of excess calorie in them. Children's diet, which include Ice cream, birthday cake, and cookies, may lead to tooth decay. Sugar can also lead the child to chronic, albeit avoidable, health problems.
Dr. Julie L. Wei, a pediatric otolaryngologist at Nemours Children's Hospital in Orlando said that the overeating of sugar in children can affect with cold-like symptoms. Wei also noticed that there are often numerous complaints of chronic runny noses, excessive mucus, cough and symptoms of sinus infections. She also warned that many children were diagnosed with allergies without a systematic check-up. In fact, those symptoms may be because of too much sugar content in their blood, the pediatric otolaryngologist pointed out. "If we get rid of the symptoms, kids won't need the medicine," Wei added.
Hence, if you fear that sugary foods may lead to hyperactivity, then you are wrong. However, though it doesn't make your children hyperactive, it still brings a lot other probable health issues to them if not moderated and guided right.
