Mother Google picks a fight with Microsoft's Skype and Apple's Facetime with its new video chat app Google Duo.

Google Duo is a new video chat service app that is exclusive offered on mobile phones. The app garnered nearly 5,000 downloads to date and 4.3 app user rating. Several users of the app were stunned with the simple and elegant material design interface of the app and its impressive video quality. It also has a great feature called Knock-knock. This feature allows the video call receiver to get a short video clip preview on who is calling. Navigating the app is also made simpler with fewer buttons and with basic functionalities.

Cnet done a review of the app and apparently, just like any video chat service, the video quality highly depends on the internet strength. Therefore if you are planning to use it over WiFi good for you. But if you are planning to rely on mobile data, then good luck.

But according to Android Authority, the faith of this app might end up like good guy Google +.. The report said that no matter how feature packed and simple Google's new app offering is, it is simply not  good enough to convince users to make a switch. The video chat feature is already present to almost all messaging app like Facebook Messenger, Kakaotalk, WhatsApp and Viber. Long time Skype and Facetime users are more likely remain faithful to the app. Google Duo also lacks the functionality to be installed across all multiple devices especially in laptops. This is a major drawback for users who using multiple devices from office to home.

On the other hand, Google will also be releasing a contender to renowned messaging apps like Facebook Messenger. Google Allo  will be released to Google Playstore and Apple App Store soon. We might be seeing both of this new offerings from Google as bloatware apps in the upcoming new version of android OS, Android Naugat.
