World Suicide Prevention Day: 'Connect, Communicate, Care'
World Suicide Prevention Day will be commemorated on September 16, 2016. It aims to prevent suicide prevention all around the world. Its theme contains three words, "Connect, Communicate, Care," which are at the heart of suicide prevention.
According to World Health Organization, there are approximately more than 800,000 people die by suicide every year and that is one person every 40 seconds. Many people and families mourn for those loved ones who take their lives or who have been bereaved by suicide. Experts stated that this tragic incident in the lives of people may be preventable.
A study reveals that mental disorders, which include brain injury, epilepsy, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, depression and addictive behaviors have a strong association with suicide. It indicates that all mental disorders have an increased risk of suicide excepting mental retardation and dementia.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention states that social connected lessens the risk of suicide. They encourage people to be there for someone who has become disconnected or might be feeling suicidal. You may connect to them with formal and informal supports, this could help to prevent suicide.
Communication is very significant in combating suicide. This must be discussed though it needs caution in awareness of how each individual may receive and interpret this information. One strategy to prevent suicide is to equip people to communicate effectively with those who might be vulnerable to suicide. To relate effectively with those who want to commit suicide, you must show compassion and empathy and listen in a non-judgmental way. Some people who have extreme suicidal thinking said that sensitively-managed conversations with others helped them to recover.
The center of the heart of the suicide prevention is "care." People must look out for others who may be struggling in their lives. Let them tell their story in their own way and at their own pace. The policy-makers and planners care enough for suicide prevention and make it a priority. The clinicians and other service providers, communities care enough to identify and support those who may be at risk of suicide.
People may show support by taking part in the International Association for Suicide Prevention's Cycle Around the Globe. For those who have the mental disorder such as having "eating disorders," you may connect to Eating Recovery Center, which could help you or someone suffer from bulimia, binge eating, and anorexia. Healing and recovery are on their way to confusing people with your help and care.
