Second gen hubs usually don't end up with a good track record. For instance, Lowe's Iris smart home second gen system, as Cnet states, ran into a couple of glitches and consequently angry customers. Wink, however, is letting its customers accept the transition whenever they're ready. The updated app that also coincides with the new hub is also reported to have a tool to help the User make the shift if they have already invested in the new Wink system.
Features
Though the idea of controlling a smart home using just a single platform is pretty exciting, other major companies including Apple, Google and Amazon may pose a threat to the Wink Hub 2. The second gen hub could definitely seize control of the entire hub market if it overcomes the issues its rivals are facing. Here's a brief account of what we know so far about the Wink Hub 2:
- Ethernet port
- Bluetooth Low Energy radio
- Thread radio
- Wi-Fi radio that supports 2.4 and 5GHz networks
- Z-Wave antenna
- Zigbee antenna
- Support for Kidde
- Support for Lutron Clear Connect
The internal Architecture of the Wink Hub 2 doesn't seem to be changed. Similar to its older version, the new hub also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and Z-Wave. However, this time, it also has improved Bluetooth control, supports faster Wi-Fi and a radio capable of working even with thread devices. There's also an additional security chip, to ensure the hub's software doesn't tamper.
What's New?

Probably the coolest new feature in the Wink Hub 2 is its ability to run robots and schedules. Robots enable one connected device to trigger a series of actions in other products. Whereas, the latter lets you set actions at the particular time of day. These programs can also be stored in the hub's local memory in case of any internet outage.
The new app detects your Hub 2 automatically when it's plugged in, and will instruct you step by step through what the simplified setup process. Additionally, if you already have a Hub, the app will save all your linked personal settings and products to transfer them to the new Hub easily.
Although the previous Hub had some problems, the company has focused in the new Wink Hub 2 to simplify the user experience without making it a Dummy system. With the new compatibility with Amazon's Echo, as Engadget reports, home automation fans may have more reasons to invest.
Wink Hub 2 will be available at Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon and on Wink's site starting from late October. The expected price for the second gen hub is $100 (£75 ). You can still buy the original Wink Hub that is available for $70 (£120 in the UK).
