Marijuana Legalization in the UK? A New Step in Medicinal Growth
A marijuana extract has recently been considered as a medicine as per a UK government branch for medicinal regulations. This new recognition might help in developing a scenario for Marijuana legalization. Moreover, it could also help in preventing/curing a number of new diseases.
The extracted compound, known as CBD, shows great hope towards support in the treatment of a number of medical disorders such as depression, bowel diseases, PTSD, multiple sclerosis, and some types of cancer.
"We have come to the opinion that products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are a medicine," said a representative from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in UK.
Moreover, CBD is said to be a non-psychoactive compound which will not be as sensitive as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). According to the MHRA, CBD offers an effect on the physiological aspects of the human body, leading to reasonable restoration, correction, and modification.
The MHRA was further quoted reporting, "Products will have to meet safety, quality and effectiveness standards to protect public health."
Marijuana is not considered a legal drug in the UK and people are likely to be prosecuted for its illegal possession. But, this recent development could let patients keep CBD, even though the measures of its possession will still be strict.
"CBD-only legislation can be detrimental overall for the medical marijuana movement because it leaves behind too many patients," said the Drug Policy Alliance deputy director, Michael Collins.
Collins further quoted, "The majority of medical marijuana patients are not CBD patients. We want people to have access to CBD but not at the cost of getting access to broader medical marijuana."
Despite this recent development, Marijuana and all its extracts are still banned as per the Federal government in the US. It is still kept as the third 'most dangerous' drug as per the FDA and DEA. The first two being Heroin and LSD. It is still to be seen whether CBD gets legalized in other countries as well. But, marijuana legalization, on the whole, is still skeptical.
