A gigantic sinkhole was disclosed and gulped the main road in the center of Fukuoka, on Japan's southern Kyushu island. The hole is estimated to around 27 meters (88 feet) in width, 30 meters (98 feet) in length and about 15 meters (49 feet) deep.

Telegraph reports that the collapse of the road occurred after 5 a.m. and waking up the Japanese residents. No casualties were reported.

On the other hand, it resulted to power off, gas leaks, evacuations and traffic disruption. There were about 170 homes without electricity for four hours after the occurrence.

A resident from a nearby building said that the lights suddenly went out and there was a big heavy sound. He further said that he went out and he saw a huge hole.

What could be the cause of this occurrence? The reason for this would be probably linked to the ongoing construction on a subway line. This has instigated smaller sinkholes before. On the other hand, sinkholes may happen naturally, in which there is some process of erosion, according to IFL Science.

Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima said that an accident like this is unheard of, one that should not have happened. He further said that they must prevent secondary accidents and will do their utmost to restore important infrastructure.

Meanwhile, some people are making it as a kind of joke linking monsters that might appear in the giant sinkhole. Meanwhile, the authorities are now investigating the probable cause of the collapse of a part of the said main road.
