Meteorite Perfume to Be Launched in Chelyabinsk Russia

Meteorite perfume, why not--it sounds more interesting than one of the random off-the-shelf celebrity scents, and especially it is set to be truly unique. Authorities in the Chelyabinsk Region, which was hit by a meteorite on February 15, on Tuesday announced plans to launch a new perfume with the scent of the celestial body, which brought the Urals city to international fame.

The new fragrance will be named “Chebarkul Meteorite,” after the lake where the meteorite’s fragments were found, the administration of the town of Chebarkul said on its website.

Local businessman Sergei Andreyev proposed to analyze the meteorite’s fragments to create a fragrance.

“It [the perfume] will most likely feature metallic and stony notes,” the administration quoted Andreyev as saying.

The administration said it will continue searching for ways to profit from the meteorite strike.

Chelyabinsk authorities earlier announced plans to erect a monument to commemorate the meteorite and to hold a competition for the best design proposal, reports RIA Novosti.

Bright objects streaked across the sky Feb. 15 in central Russia and Urals regions, lighting up the blue sky, smashing windows and causing injury. The fragments have caused widespread damage and have injured 1,000 people. The plunging meteor exploded with a flash, hitting six towns and affecting the entire population.

NASA estimates that the meteor, which was is 50 feet in diameter, travelled faster than the speed of sound before plunging into the Earth's atmosphere.
