Gone are the days when to get a Google Play APK Update, a whole new APK file had to be downloaded. Since 2012, Google's team is working on a reduced file size of the update. Now, finally, the team has successfully reduced the size of the update file by up to 65 percent.

Google Play APK Update: Everything You Should Know About File-by-File Patching

The compression of the file size is not that easy as it seems. The Android apps are similar to the ZIP archives but they also make use of several special standards. Using a Deflate Technology, the file size is reduced to a large amount. While the compression does reduce the file size, to update several components in the archive becomes a difficult task. Google is now making use of a new file-by-file patching approach, which makes the components update comparatively easier and saves those changes in the form of a new Android APK.

The new File-by-file patching system first compares both the old and new archives. The sections to which the update is to be made is then identified and changes are made accordingly. Google then checks the updated file to verify that the updated app is similar to that available on the Google Play Store. However, there's also a catch with the new system for Google Play APK Update.

Although the file size is considerably reduced, your Smartphone may take a longer time to process. Not only the processing time will be doubled, some Smartphone may find it difficult to process the updates, especially when you're updating two or more apps. Google has not yet rolled out the update for all the apps. Only the apps which get auto-updated in the background will have the new File-by-file patching method.

Google Play APK Update: Improvements For Smaller App Downloads

While Google Play Store continues to expand rapidly with new apps being added every day, Android developers have also been working on new updates more frequently to patch the security vulnerabilities, and to push for new and better content. While the majority of the users are sensitive to their data usage even when they're using WiFi. Now with the new Patching method, Google is reducing the data needed for the app update.

The new system will also lead to major improvements for smaller app downloads. With the new method being applied on more than 90 percent of the apps available on the Play Store, only minor changes to the APK files will be downloaded. These minor updates will comparatively take up a very limited amount of data which will then be merged with the existing files.
