NVIDIA tested self driving cars on the busy public roads of California last Friday. The company had received the necessary permits from the California authorities on December 8 itself.

More and more tech companies are slowly joining the uprising of self driving cars. These driverless cars are revolutionary in themselves. Companies like Uber, Intel, and even Google have started investing whole company verticals in this field.

Nvidia too, has joined the growing following of self driving cars now. Nvidia is a company which is renowned for its graphic cards. On December 9, it tested its autonomous car on the public streets of California after it obtained the license just a day before. The car tested on the roads was the Nvidia BB8.

The idea was first floated around by the co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang when he was interviewed alongside Elon Musk in 2015. As we know, Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla Motors.

"What NVIDIA is doing with Tegra is really interesting and really important for self-driving in the future," Musk said at the time. Tegra is a mobile processor brand of Nvidia itself. Tegra is a part of the chipsets which were specially developed by NVIDIA in order to support artificial intelligence. The graphic processor units (GPUs) are highly important aspects of self driving technology basics. Nvidia spent around $2 Billion while developing P100 chipset for Tesla.

This September, Nvidia had announced that they would be working with Baidu, a Chinese company, on an artificial intelligence which can indulge in autonomous driving. Nvidia then built several test cars and was working on the technology by test driving them in parking lots and on New Jersey roads. Nvidia had developed a computer vision system customised for self driving in 2015 itself and followed it up with a remastered version, Drive PX2 last year. Roborace, a self driving car competition in racing announced that the vehicles participating in the race were using Drive PX2.

As reported by the Verge, an unidentifiable car with Nvidia brand markings on the body was spotted driving around in the Bay Area, California.

How is Nvidia going to test out in the self driving car segment? Do you have hopes with this technology?
