BMW has undoubtedly brought up some of the best cars for the current and future generation. And, now their latest technology built for vehicles comes up with a new concept based on Holographic imagery. The BMW HoloActive Touch system is pretty much out of the sci-fi movies. This touch-sensitive display is ready to offer all the tactile information related to navigation, music and more while floating in mid-air. CES 2017 will witness this technology live, but what it really tends to offer is still pretty much non-tactical (at least for now).

BMW HoloActive Touch System: Where It Lacks

BMW came up with the holographics display concept as a part of its i-Inside Future Study that enables passengers to interact with the car using this new technology. According to BMW, the HoloActive Touch display will be an immersive experience right in front of the passenger or driver. But, the lacking part of the technology is that it is too immersive, leading to lack of attention from the road. Even if the car has self-driving features in it, it still is not that accurate for autonomous driving.

Plus, the technology uses hand gestures instead of actual physical buttons which means it has to be very accurate to process each and every command while displaying in mid-air. To incorporate the concept the company will have to build a flawless system. The concept of invisible dials and buttons has been a dream project of a company called, Ultrahaptics which will display the BMW HoloActive Touch system technology at the CES 2017.

Ultrahaptics claims that the gesture movement in the BMW HoloActive Touch system can be incorporated by drivers without the need to take their eyes off the road. The company further stated that the idea of not using a touchscreen with help drivers from being distracted leading to prevention of accidents. This might need to get used to for first-time users as moving hands in mid-air is something that is not as tactile. Our mind is more used to operate something that can be physically touched.

Besides that, the idea is so impressive and mesmerizing that it, on the contrary, is more distracting. Actually, the concept is so cool that drivers would not be able to take their eyes off the beautiful holographic imagery if the BMW HoloActive Touch actually works. The technology is needs more practical time to getting used to. And, it surely will.
