Scientists have found surprising discovery 60 miles underneath the surface of New England. They discovered that there are baby volcanoes fermenting deep down the surface.

The findings of the discovery were reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The study was led by researchers from the Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, according to IFL Science.

They examined the seismic waves that traveled in this crust anomaly known as Northern Appalachian Anomaly, which is a hot piece of Earth's crust about 250 miles wide in New Hampshire. The team found that there is an active magma upwelling underneath and this could be a baby volcano one day.

Bill Menke, a geologist at Columbia University, said that he would not be surprised if, in a few million years, there will be volcanoes on the East Coast of the United States. The researchers also discovered that the rocks at this hotspot have a temperature of about 1,300 degrees Celsius, in which it is a temperature associated with a mantle plume. The anomaly has also the indication of a plume. If the brewing continues, these would someday become volcanoes.

Inverse reports that New Hampshire is not the only place with brewing baby volcanoes underneath its surface. The scientists also discovered a pool of magma under a New Zealand town just 6 miles beneath the surface earlier this year. On the other hand, it is not expected to erupt anytime. Meanwhile, New Hampshire could become the next global hotspot in the future with this new discovery.
