Abbott Laboratories Recalls Freestyle Insulinx Blood Glucose Meters, Displays Incorrect Test Results
After finding out that it displays and stores incorrect test results for dangerously high blood sugar levels, Abbott Laboratories is recalling its FreeStyle InsuLinx Blood Glucose Meters.
The Abbott Park, Ill., company reported that the meters will display and store readings for blood glucose levels of 1,024 milligrams per deciliter or higher at much lower levels, which is extremely high, rare and requiring of immediate medical attention, according to U.S. News and World Report.
The defect could delay both the identification and treatment of severe hyperglycemia, also known as a condition in which an excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood plasma, and the company has estimated that there are about 50,000 users of the device in the U.S.
Researchers warn that inaccurate readings can not only delay treatment but pose serious injury or even death.
Abbott said customers with the meter should contact its diabetes care customer service or download a software update that resolves the issue.
According to Johnson & Johnson, a similar recall was made last month for several types of its blood glucose meters.
