A latest study claims that men who regularly wear kilts during the year they plan to procreate have better sperm quality and higher fertility.

The study was conducted by researchers from Erasmus MC University Medical Center in the Netherlands. The study was done to find out how true the anecdotal report is that claims men who wear Scottish kilts have better sperm quality and fertility.

Scottish kilts are male garments similar to a knee-length pleated skirt.

In order to find out the truth behind the report, they examined more than 100 heterogeneous observational studies that were published between 1934 and 1996. The study had shown that there has been a global fall in the quality of semen over a period of 50 years. Apart from this, it states that there has been a major reduction in fertility rates especially in the Westernized countries, reports Nature World News.

They suggest that the decline in fertility rate could be due to widespread environmental pollution and change in lifestyle.

For adequate spermatogenesis to take place, the temperature of the scrotum should be 3 degree Celsius lower than the rest of the body. Factors such as physical activity, body position and clothing affect the scrotal temperature.

A previous study demonstrated how externally wrapping a ram's scrotum for 80 days caused a loss of spermatozoa and degeneration of the tubular epithelium. From this, the researchers concluded that animals can get sterilized with the help of their own body heat.

Researchers believed that the fit of the underwear affects spermatogenisis. They claim that any tight and isolating clothing, not necessarily underwear, does have a drastic effect on the scrotal temperature.

Based on the past finding, the authors were quoted in Counsel&Heal stating, "It is likely that the greatest benefit of frequently wearing a kilt is the cooling of the testicles to physiologically normal levels, which, however, highly hypothetical, disposes the wearer to increased spermatogenesis and improved sperm quality."

Apart from this, men who wear kilts have an additional psychological benefit, state the authors. It is said that wearing a kilt attracts attention and makes them feel more masculine. Men who don kilts apparently get a positive attention from women.

The study was published in the Scottish Medical Journal.
