$120 Egg Sandwich: How Healthy is It?
If you like eggs and bacon with some pizazz, you can certainly have it, but only at a cost.
An Australian restaurant's new egg sandwich might be just the thing for you, but a little too pricey for most to afford.
4 Fourteen, a restaurant in Surry Hill, New South Wales Australia, revealed that it will be offering a $120 egg sandwich, according to The Daily Telegraph.
The sandwich, which features a high-quality cut of bacon, will be rolled out for one week as part of Sydney's "Bacon Week," a promotion designed to promote the country's pork industry.
Besides some slices of award-winning bacom from the Slade Point Meat Specialists of Queensland, the $120 egg sandwich will feature a pan-fried duck egg, smoked gourmet truss tomatoes, foie gras, caviar, truffle shavings and English cheddar. The decadent ingredients are matched with a homemade bun and served with sides of fries and shaved truffle aioli.
4Fourteen's egg sandwich may come with a hefty price tag, but head chef Carla Jones believes that a few people will try it anyway. Still, she won't count herself among its customers.
"It's not something I ever thought I'd be doing but it will be interesting to see how many we'll sell," she said, according to The Daily Telegraph. "I reckon some people will buy it just to see what it's like. I'm not sure I'd eat it -- I'm not that into truffles and stuff like that."
The $120 concoction is just one of several extravagant dishes being prepared for the upcoming Bacon Week in Sydney.
"About two-thirds of bacon sales made in Australia are from pork that's imported and the average consumer doesn't know that's going on," Australian Pork CEO Andrew Spencer told The Daily Telegraph.
Sydney's Bacon Week will run from May 12 to May 19.
But what can we expect from a sandwich like this, especially when bacon is concerned, a staple that contains 68 percent of its calories from fat, most of which is saturated? While no calorie-content has been listed for the sandwich thus far, it may not only be expensive, but come at a detriment to your health.
