Alicia Silverstone: Health Advocate, Actress Starts Breast Milk Sharing Program

Health experts can't seem to make up their minds on most matters. However, one thing they do seem to agree on is the best nourishment for an infant: Breast milk.

A process that not only helps a mother burn extra calories and lose pregnancy weight faster, it helps provide the newborn with an essential mix of vitamins, protein and fat that might not be as available in baby formulas.

Unfortunately, not all mothers can breastfeed, and even for some that can, hormonal disorders, medications and other problems can cause an insufficient amount of milk for the child. Fortunately, for women who are fixed on providing breast milk for their baby, there are breast milk donors out there that can provide.

Recently, health advocate and actress Alicia Silverstone has created a milk sharing program that will allow mothers with low milk counts to purchase from her website and have milk from donors that has been screened. The milk is then shipped to the mother's home.

"A lot of women unfortunately have a similar struggle, and there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to give their babies the most amazing start in life with clean, mean, glorious breast milk," Silverstone wote, according to Yahoo News. "And because we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives."

Silverstone also points out, according to an interview with ABC News, that this is a parent's first chance to take part in their child's life.

"What a child consumes is one of the most important decisions a mother can make," Silverstone wrote, according to the news organization. "I wanted to create a space where like-minded women with this very particular need can start a dialogue and build community. It's a jumping-off point for moms to connect and be active participants in finding the perfect fit for their baby.  It goes without saying that common sense precautions should be taken."

However, some skeptics have questioned Silverstone's parenting practices in the past. For instance, the mother was adamant about mouth-to-mouth feeding.
