Possible New Species of Fish Discovered Near Chile, What Should it's Name be?
A new species of fish was discovered just a few months ago in the seas surrounding the Desventuradas Islands. According to experts, they actually believe that this creature could be a new species.
It's colorful yellow and orange markings make quite the site on the little swimmer. And National Geographic is holding a contest from July 31 to August 26 to give the mystery fish a common name.
This 4-inch little fishy newly noticed in February could have it's own name, thanks to you.
According to researchers via National Geographic, while the brightly colored creature was maneuvering a submersible 436 feet down a basalt wall, they spotted movement as its glittering fins traced along the waters.
"We got closer and tried to focus and zoom our video camera to get a closer look, but the spots darted into a hole and disappeared as soon as our submarine lights were on them," Enric Sala wrote in an email, the National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. "We consulted experts and everyone thought that it was a new species."
However, to confirm that the sighting of this fish is indeed a new species will require lots of added research and investigation.
"Scientific naming is a very laborious process," said Luiz Rocha, a fish researcher at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, who was not involved in the expedition, via the news organization.
What would you name the fish?
