53-Year-Old Gives Birth to her own Daughter's Twin Babies

The power of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is simply amazing. When Louise Brown was born from the procedure in England back in 1978, the first child to be conceived outside her mother's womb, couples having baby troubles across the globe would have no idea that this fertility treatment could change their lives--a procedure in which after conception normally precedes, the embryo is then placed in the uterus. And since then, the rest is history. Statistics show that as many as 200,000 babies have been born from this procedure or a similar technique.

Thanks to IVF, a 53-year-old women was able to give birth to two of her own twin grandchildren.

According to Medical Daily, Susie Kozisek successfully delivered twin girls for her daughter, Ashley Larkin, acting as a gestational carrier.

Shortly after Larkin became pregnant, she was diagnosed with a condition caused by high blood pressure, known as pulmonary hypertension. This begins when tiny arteries in the lungs begin to narrow and can potentially be destroyed. It can make blood flow to the heart slower and possible cause cardiac failure.

Gestational carriers are typically used for women who are unable to carry a pregnancy but want to have their own biological children. This can be accomplished through IVF when their fertilized embryos are implanted in their carrier's uterus.

According to ABC News, Dr. Jani Jenson performed the procedure for the family, nothing that it's relatively common for family members to act as carriers.

"It's unusual for a mother to act as a gestational carrier for her own child, and she was at the older end of the spectrum for pregnancy," Jensen said, via the news organization. "But she was a good candidate, because she'd carried previous pregnancies successfully and was in excellent health."

Fox News notes that this is the second time Kozisek has acted as a gestational carrier for her daughter. She also carried and gave birth to Larkin's 2-year-old daughter without any complications for both pregnancies.
