Binge Drinking Causes Tear in Student’s Windpipe
A 21-year-old University student tore her windpipe vomiting and spent six days in hospital with serious complications after downing cheap triple shots of vodka.
Megan Thomason, a Business and Management student at Hull University, put her life at risk by downing three treble vodka and cokes that cost her just £2.89 ($4.49).
She began vomiting the next day and was rushed to hospital and was diagnosed with surgical emphysema, due to which her neck and face was swollen causing severe suffocation, reports the Mirror.
The damage to the throat was caused due to 24-hours of continuous puking and retching.
"It was the worst experience of my whole life," said Thomason. "People say they get hung over but I nearly died. Because they were triples, it was actually the equivalent of nine drinks and you don't think of that at the time. I was just in shock when I realised how serious it was."
An increasing number of youngsters indulge in binge drinking, which is a dangerous practice. It causes dangerous and negative outcomes such as accidents, unruly behavior as it impairs the sensory perceptions.
Thomason spent over six days in hospital without any food or water. "If I had eaten I could have got blood poisoning from the food or I could have choked if it had gone into my lungs, " she said.
After this incident, Thomason has given up alcohol and plans on cautioning young students against the risk of consuming cheap alcohol.
