Vials of Antipsychotic Treatment by Johnson & Johnson Recalled: Mold Discovered
You've probably bought their products to wash off your little rug-rat, and for a company with 'more than a century of caring' from 1886 to the present, it comes as a sad surprise that Johnson & Johnson, popularly recognized for the high quality of its products, especially its baby goodies, has hit a string of recalls in the last two years, leading some to question the quality of the company's products.
The most recent recall has been the schizophrenia drug Risperdal Consta after health officials discovered mold during a routine testing process, making it the second recall in a span of only approximately two weeks. Their website notes that the drug, which has been recalled from wholesalers, pharmacies, healthcare providers and distributors, consists of 70,000 dosage packs in a single lot.
The prescription medication is used to commonly treat patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. However, unlike their Risperdal anti-psychotic medication, this is available via pill form in injections.
"We estimate that fewer than 5,000 dose packs remain in the market considering our current inventory levels and the usage of this product," spokeswoman Robyn Reed Frenze said, via Reuters.
While risks for patients remains low and no adverse events concerning infection have been associated with its use, just last week the company recalled 200,000 bottles of liquid Motrin for infants due to the fear of some bottles containing tiny particles of plastic. The company has also recalled other products over the years, ranging from Tylenol to artificial hips.
J&J advised Risperdal Consta patients to continue treatment. For questions, the company said doctors, nurses and patients should call 1-800-526-7736 during business hours.
