Rebecca, 12, Commits Suicide after Being Cyber Bullied by 15 Girls over a Year
Rebecca Ann Sedwick, a 12-year-old girl from Florida committed suicide by jumping off an industrial cement silo located half a mile away from her home after being cyber bullied ruthlessly over one and a half year.
She was last seen on Monday, September 9, 2013 morning at 6.45 a.m. She was found dead in a cement factory in Lakeland Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The girl's family claims that continuous bullying over such a long span of time forced her to take this drastic step.
The investigators found above a dozen girls who regularly bullied the 12-year-old over various social media sites. Bullying started at the Crystal Lake Elementary School in 2012.
Cuts on the right wrist of Rebecca were seen by her mother Tricia Norman in December 2012. On being questioned she revealed that she was being bullied. After this incident she was hospitalized for three days and she underwent counseling but she was bullied again after she returned to school.
Rebecca's mother then decided to home school her for the remaining year and admitted her to a new school, Lawton Chiles Middle Academy after that. Rebecca was happy with her new school but cyber bullying continued on various sites where she received messages like "You're ugly", "Go kill yourself" and "Why are you still alive?"
"She put on a perfect, happy face, she never told me," Norman said in a report by The Ledger. "I never had a clue. I mean, she told me last year when she was being bullied but not this year and I have no idea why."
Rebecca was "absolutely terrorized on social media," Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference, Thursday.
The cell phones and laptops of the juveniles being investigated have been ceased by the police and the Sheriff thanked the parents of these children for their support regarding the case. The authorities are considering whether to bring charges against the girls.
Rebecca left several indications of her suicide before taking the extreme step. She changed her online name to "That Dead Girl." She even messaged a boy in North Carolina she had met online, "I'm jumping." . The investigators also found various messages like "How do you remove the blades from a razor", "How many over the counter drugs do you take to die?", "What is overweight for a 13-year old?" and many more.
An autopsy was conducted by the investigating team Tuesday, the toxicology report is yet to come.
