Porn Star Cameron Bay Emphasizes Importance of Condoms in the Porn Industry
Adult movie stars Cameron Bay and her boyfriend Rod Daily, who recently tested positive for HIV, emphasized the need for regular condom usage in the porn industry. The two were speaking at a press conference Wednesday, in Hollywood.
The actors accused the negligent health standards of the San Francisco-based fetish porn company Kink.com for the infection.
Bay had joined the porn industry just three months before she found she was HIV positive. The company conducts tests on their porn stars every 28 days and Bay was clean in the last test, which was conducted on July 27. She claimed the shoot she acted in on July 31 got her infected. Her co-actor developed a cut on his penis but the shoot was not stopped.
"I'm not here to push anything down anybody's throat, I'm not here to fight anybody's fight," Bay stated, in an emotional press conference, reported Daily News.
"I'm just here to share my story and to get knowledge out there to people and try to prevent anything like this happening to anyone else."
Daily on the other hand acts in gay scenes, in which the use of condoms is extremely crucial compared to the straight films. He believes that the sudden rise in HIV cases could be avoided with regular condom use.
"I do know for a fact that condoms will work, have worked, do work," Daily said.
The porn industry came to a standstill after a third actor was detected with this grave disease. A moratorium on further shooting was imposed by a trade body but the shooting has resumed again.
The group stated it would also modify its guidelines of testing porn actors for STDs every 14 days instead of 28 days.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation recommended the usage of condoms in the porn industry to prevent actors from getting infected while on set but Peter Acworth, the founder of Kink.com said that the responsibility lies with the actors.
"All of our models are informed that they request a condom at any time, that they can stop a shoot at any time, and that they control the scene... We take consent and safety seriously," Acworth stated in a written statement.
"The problem goes beyond offering condoms to performers," said Patrick Stone, a porn actor.
"They had me scheduled for a shoot tomorrow, and as far as they knew, I was HIV positive," he said at the press conference.
Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation explained that protecting the health of porn workers is not an easy task to do even if they are tested for the disease regularly.
"Whether or not [Bay] was infected on set, she performed with HIV between her tests," Weinstein said in a report by the LA Times. "If you think that Russian roulette is a great way to protect workers, then the present system is perfect."
