NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg Aboard ISS Makes Toy Dinosaur Using Space Station Scraps
NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, 43, has created a special toy for her little boy Jack using the space station's scraps. She made a small dinosaur in zero gravity that is currently floating around the space station.
Beating all odds in a weightless environment, Nyberg ,an Expedition 37 crew member, made a toy dino that has a light green belly and an olive green back. The green dino is stitched at the ends with white thread. She uploaded a photo of the toy dino on her Pinterest Page with the caption 'Made in Space', recently.
The self- described crafter loves sewing and quilting and she actually took along with her a pack of threads, sewing needles and fabric samples. But this toy dino consists of materials taken from her orbital home as it is made of a velcro like fabric that lines Russian food containers found on ISS. The toy is stuffed with scraps of a used T-shirt.
According to collectSPACE, several space travellers carry along with them small toys to the outer space, most often as good luck charms. But Nyberg's toy dino that resembles a Tyrannosaurus Rex is the first that is fabricated in space. The astronaut is anxiously waiting to gift her son the toy from space on her return to Earth, which is scheduled for November 11, Veteran's Day.
"A photo Nyberg earlier shared on Pinterest revealed that Jack has his own handiwork in space, too. Hanging on the wall of her quarters is an orange and pink painting labeled "For Mommy", reports Huffington Post.
Nyberg has been posting interesting pictures and videos from space. A video she posted earlier demonstrated how to wash hair in space. It generated a massive online buzz.
Nyberg blasted off for her mission on May 28 aboard the Russian Soyuz rocket.
