A 5-month-old baby, Daniel McCabe, received a life-saving liver transplant just after 40 minutes of being placed on the waiting list.
The new study revealed that cromolyn sodium successfully blocks a series of cells that trigger liver scarring (known as fibrosis), which in advanced cases can lead to cirrhosis.
A liver scarring diagnosis test had been developed by Newcastle scientists and medics. The test uses a new type of genetic blood analysis which could be administered even before someone falls ill.
