Fruits With Low Glycemic Index Are Best For People With Diabetes, See List Here

Fruits are foods that are healthy for the overall well-being of an individual. On the other hand, for people with diabetes, not all fruits are best for them. Most of the fruits also contain sugar.
According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), fruit is healthy to eat for people with diabetes. The experts recommend eating fresh or frozen fruits than the processed that come out of a can or jar. The processed ones are those dried fruit and fruit juices.
The NIDDK advises people with diabetes to avoid eating canned fruits and drinking fruit juices and smoothies with added sugar. These may heighten blood sugar level, according to Medical News Today.
Experts say that fruit with the low glycemic index can control the blood sugar levels and good for people with diabetes. Glycemic Index (GI) is a quantity that is linked with a certain food that indicates the effect of food on the person's blood glucose or blood sugar level. The standard value, which is an equivalent amount of pure glucose, is 100.
Most fruits have a low glycemic index. The U.S. Department of Agricultures stated that fruits that have the low glycemic index of 55 include apples, bananas, avocados, cherries, grapes, kiwi fruit, grapefruit, nectarines, berries, plums, peaches, orange, pears and strawberries. On the other hand, fruits with high GI of 70 or above include watermelon and dates. Medium fruits with GI of 56 to 69 are figs, honeydew melon, pineapples and papayas.
So, how much fruit should you eat? Most of the guidelines advise adults and children to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The United States guidelines remind the people to fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables each meal. The other half would be protein and grains.
