Facebook Tweaks its Privacy Settings: Share more Posts Privately
Facebook is changing, yet again. But this time, it's all about the privacy settings and making it easier to share posts with just friends.
On Thursday, following the company's annual shareholders' meeting, officials announced that posts from new users will be shared with "Friends" unless the default settings are switched to "Public," according to NBC News.
New Facebook members "sometimes feel like their information is more public than they want," said Facebook product manager Mike Nowak, via USA Today. "We've listened and adjusted."
With over 1.2 billion members enjoying this social media site that started up in 2004, many have been confused on the default setting that allow users to posts information publicly. With this adjustment, Facebook officials said they hope to fix some of that confusion.
"We recognize that it is much worse for someone to accidentally share with everyone when they actually meant to share just with friends, compared with the reverse," according to Forbes. However, it's not quite so simple.
For instance, though privacy settings can easily be adjusted for certain audiences, once a setting is changed, it "sticks" to that new setting, unless users change it themselves, again.
Example: If a post is shared publicly, it will need to either be switched to "Friends" or "Private," or it will remain "Public." (Just make sure to remember and change your post settings, of course.)
In addition, the site is also launching a "privacy check-up" to enable users to review privacy practices and settings, including "who they're posting to and privacy settings for information on their profiles."
