Tesla Pushing for Massive Expansion to Cater Untapped Markets
Tesla, the Silicon Valley automobile maker is steadily focusing on expanding their facilities to cater different markets. Though Tesla was initially known to produce ingenious electronic vehicles with staggering price tags, the company is now looking at tapping into the mass market with the release of the Tesla Model 3. Tesla has to coup up with the increasing demand for their electric vehicles by expanding its production plant in Fremont, California. based on Motor Trend's report.
If a zoning agreement pushes through, Tesla's Fremont plant could grow and eventually double its current size and could produce 500,000 electric vehicles per year. Though it is still unclear on how long would it take for the company to double the size of its production plant, but Tesla is clear on its goals to make 500,000 cars annually by 2018. Under the expansion project, the size of the facility could increase by about 4.6 millions square feet, and this means they would need more employees to fill the extra space. The number of employees could jump from 6,210 to 9,315. As of the moment, the automaker has already bought an additional 25 acres of property next to the Fremont plant.
For Tesla, they will need to expand their production facility rapidly to meet its ambitious goals. Upon the Model 3's debut on the 4th quarter of 2017, it will be expected to compete with other affordable long-range electronic automobiles from other auto makers like the Chevrolet Bolt. Aside from producing electric sedans, the company has also a grand plan of making electric trucks and buses. Knowing the Fremont plan produced just over 50,000 EVs, the company's CEO Elon Musk has said he wants to produce more than 1 million electronic vehicles by the year 2020. The company has been very optimistic with its goals of changing the future of automobile and their plan is surely getting some grounds since the company has started.
