Google finally came out with their own premium smartphone, however, and it's officially called "Pixel, Phone by Google." Ever wondered why they didn't name it "Google Phone?" For a company that has a penchant on putting their name on everything, this move is quite surprising. Additionally, do reviews think the phone's worth it?

According to Rick Osterloh, Google's hardware chief, the name Pixel is very apt for their new product. He says that the name perfectly represents "the best of hardware and software designed by Google." The smartphone isn't the first piece of technology that bore the name. Google has designed Pixel Chromebooks, which they made under their roof.

Osterloh also said a few words about the Google brand and its limit. Another factor why they didn't just name it after their company is because they believe that if "a brand stretches too far, it breaks." He thinks that the "Phone by Google" is enough to make people associate their company to the new smartphone.

According to a review by The Verge, the Pixel phone seems to be adequate and it does the job. However, reviews said that it's really not spectacular. It's an efficient phone, the tech is great, the camera is a little bit better than other phones, but overall - there's no "wow" factor that will make consumers get their hands on it.

Telecom Verizon will be selling the Pixel phone, but the guys at Ars Technica don't seem to think that this is a good deal at all. Google announced that the phone would be having monthly updates, which ideally, will come on time. With Verizon being in the picture, they can still get in the way of the phone's updates.

While Verizon is claiming to be the phone's exclusive carrier, Google will sell unlocked units themselves, alongside Best Buy, Target, and even Walmart. Some consumers are now confused because it doesn't seem like it's exclusive at all.

It is recommended that the Pixel phone should be purchased at other merchants instead. Additionally, if you aren't a fan of regular updates - then you're better off getting another smartphone.
